Gardens and parks in the Dordogne - Lot region

The Dordogne – Lot region has plenty of beautiful gardens and parks. Some of these gardens and parks even have the quality label "Jardin Remarquable". This label is awarded by the Ministry of Culture and Communication and the prefect of the region to gardens that meet certain quality criteria in terms of aesthetic importance, historical character, botanical value, maintenance and reception of the public. If you like to visit gardens, this region of France is perfect for you. Most of the gardens are exciting to visit for both adults and children. Some of these gardens even have puzzles and riddles for you to solve.

Jardin Exotique de la Roque Gageac

In Roque Gageac, which lies between a cliff and the Dordogne River, is a garden with a microclimate. During the night, the rocks release the heat which they store during the day. Thanks to this palm trees, banana trees, bougainvilleas, orange trees, lemon trees and pomegranate trees can grow in this exotic garden. The garden also has beautiful views over the surroundings, the Dordogne river and the village.

Jardins de Marqueyssac

In Vézac you’ll find the Marqueyssac Castle, an estate with a boxwood garden with 150,000 boxwoods and 6 km of hiking trails. The estate is 22 hectares and was built during the 19th century. In the park there is a tea house and a souvenir shop. You’ll also see peacocks walking around freely. From the Belvedere, a balcony at  an altitude of 130 meters, you’ll have a beautiful view. During the summer months, the garden is lit with candles every Thursday evening.

Jardins Panoramiques de Limeuil

Limeuil is a mediaeval village which lies on top of a hill. Limeuil is home to the well-known gardens of Limeuil has a color garden, a witch garden, a water garden and an insect garden. The gardens were designed by one of the villages’ residents, Doctor Linarès who lived here from 1902. From the gardens you have a beautiful view over the Dordogne river. There is also a garden with an Escape Game where codes have to be deciphered.

Jardins Les Bambous de Planbuisson

This garden has an unique collection of about 240 bamboo species and about 100 grass species from all over the world. This remarkable garden has received various awards and quality labels. When you walk between the bamboo trees you will truly experience the enormous height of these trees with their straight trunks.

Jardins d'Eyrignac

The gardens of Eyrignac are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has hundreds of boxwoods and yews which have been pruned into beautiful sculptures, ponds and fountains, a rose garden with white roses and an authentic Chinese pagoda. The gardens, which were landscaped in the 18th century, are divided into a number of themes. During the summer special evenings with picnics and fireworks are organized. The garden also has a restaurant and various picnic areas.

Les jardins d'eau de Carsac

The water gardens of Carsac were landscaped on an estate in the 16th century. The gardens, with beautiful colors, are well-known for the many species of (Chinese) water lilies, lotuses and other aquatic plants. Aquatic plants have been brought to the Dordogne from all over the world. Be sure to have a wander round these gardens. You are allowed to feed and touch the koi carp.

Le jardin du Château des Milandes

The Renaissance château Milandes, which has beautiful views over the Dordogne valley, is surrounded by a beautiful garden. The garden was landscaped in the 20th century and designed in French style with several terraces, lawns, boxwood hedges and flower beds. The garden has: waterfalls, a basin and statues with fountains. During the summer the garden organizes bird of prey shows. There is also a cozy brasserie by the château.

Jardins de Jumilhac

Jumilhac Castle and its surrounding gardens were built and landscaped between the 13th and 15th centuries. It is still privately owned. In the 17th century, the owner, the Marquis of Jumilhac, ordered the construction of 12 terraces which were to serve as a staircase towards the island which lay 45m lower. Unfortunately, only 2 of these terraces were still intact in the 19th century. In 1995 the current Marquis ordered the garden to be restored to the way it was in 1770.
