La Roque-Gageac in the Dordogne

La Roque-Gageac is on the banks of the Dordogne and is built into a steep rock wall. The village is one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France.

Roque-Gageac: picturesque village

The characteristic elongated villa consists mainly of a main street with beautiful houses built in front of the high cliff. It has some picturesque streets. Also, there is a kind of village square. It was fortified with ramparts in the Middle Ages. It was also the country seat of the Bishops of Sarlat-la-Canéda.
The vertical difference in the village makes it less suitable for tourists with a poor physical condition. You can not escape a steep climb when visiting.

Views Dordogne valley

Once you've reached the top, you can enjoy a beautiful view over the river and the quiet streets with the necessary tourist stores. A bit off to the side of the village is the castle la Malaterie. Be sure to make time for a walk in the Roque Gageac, but even better: make time for a couple more walks; the surroundings are worth it. For example, visit the Manoir de Tarde (patrician house of a prominent family in the Dordogne) and the river and its surroundings, and go up for more spectacular views.

Activities

You can book a balloon ride, take the tour boat on the Dordogne (Gabares Norbet), go canoeing or make a nice stop on a bike ride, for example Les Eyzies - Le Roque Gageac or Sarlat - Le Roque Gageac (take at least one day for each of these routes as you will be cycling 40 kilometres with 800 metres of altitude difference).
